November 1944. The air above Kessel is heavy with cold and gunpowder. With my Gordon Highlanders, we liberated North Limburg, metre by metre. The enemy at our heels, the German border in sight. But before celebration came fear, destruction and sorrow. I saw what war leaves behind. What freedom costs. Walk with me through the garden and feel how this region held its breath, waiting for liberation.

Rebuild a castle, you say? A listed monument? With volunteers? I said yes, without hesitation, full of conviction. What followed was not a construction project, but a community adventure. Dozens of volunteers dedicated more than thirty thousand hours to building something greater than themselves. Come and visit. I will show you how the most modern castle in the Netherlands was built on the remains of one of the oldest. A place shaped by the minds and hands of volunteers and, above all, one that lives on in their hearts.

After Baron Frits’s death, the castle stood empty. I brought it back to life. Together with the Sisters of Divine Providence, we were forced to flee Germany in search of a better future for ourselves and for the many children who would come to live at De Keverberg. I kept watch, prayed and taught. Hundreds of children grew up here between 1880 and 1944. Their stories? I will tell you.

A baron with a taste for the eccentric.

After my death in 1876, I vanished without a trace until 2015. When my castle was brought back to life, I felt it too. And now? Now you can hear me in the dark cellars, reflecting on my life, sometimes regretful, sometimes proud, sometimes amused. Will you come and sit by my deathbed?

Master Ton

Can you hear it? The marlstone has been whispering its stories here since the year 1050. And me? I know them all. As a village historian, writer and teacher, I have helped thousands of Kessel residents discover their own history. No one knows the stories of De Keverberg better than I do: why it was built here, how vast the Land of Kessel once was, and who fought and courted here. I know it all. And soon, you will too.
